Canada Plastics Pact

The Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) is creating a circular economy in Canada in which plastic waste is kept in the economy and out of the environment. It is a unique multi-stakeholder, industry-led, cross-value chain collaboration platform which aims to tackle plastic packaging waste and pollution by bringing together businesses, government, non-governmental organizations and other key actors in the local plastics value chain. Canada Plastics Pact Partners are united, working together on achieving clear, actionable targets by the year 2025.

The Canada Plastics Pact joins the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Plastics Pact network, a globally aligned response to plastic waste and pollution, that enables vital knowledge sharing and coordinated action. The Foundation, through its New Plastics Economy initiative, has united more than 1,000 organisations behind a common vision for a circular economy for plastic.

How does the CPP work?

The CPP unites diverse leaders and experts in the national plastics value chain to collaborate and rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastic packaging to realize a circular economy for plastic in Canada. This will also involve developing, piloting, and scaling innovative and bold solutions to overcome systemic barriers.

  • ENGAGE: Each CPP Partner has voluntarily stepped forward to work towards four bold ambitious targets, to 2025. The CPP seeks to build on extensive work already underway in Canada.
  • COLLABORATE:  The CPP brings together Partners in rethinking how plastics are designed, used, and reused. By drawing on its understanding of market roadblocks, the CPP will be solutions-oriented.
  • ACT: The CPP, with a bias towards action, will accelerate and fast-track new approaches for packaging in alignment with emerging policy and legislation to achieve industry-wide transformation.

As a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network, the CPP is aligned behind this common global vision, with its action and solutions tailored to Canada’s unique needs and challenges.
